EU INTRODUCES THE OFFENCE OF ECOCIDE - WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF IT?

Ecocide becomes a criminal offence: with 499 votes in favour, 100 against and 34 abstentions, the European Council introduces a directive tightening rules against environmental crime. Sentences of between 5 and 10 years' imprisonment and financial penalties are provided for. The concern is that, behind seemingly commendable objectives oriented towards environmental protection, lies yet another instance of ideological exploitation.
